I loved this challenge. It was so great to see my team members be so loud with their voices and with their actions. I'm excited to keep up some new behaviors but also know that it's not just me that's working hard to make a difference.

I was chatting with a colleague about this today: Does anyone know what the main barriers are to folks throwing plastic bottles into the trash instead of the recycling when the bins are right next to each other? I'd love to be able to figure out if it's an educational barrier or tied to an identity or something else. Not sure how you could evaluate that.

No data on this, but I personally think part of it is not understanding or being unsure of what types of recyclables are accepted since different /communities/household collections accept different things depending on local recycling capabilities. Perhaps a list with pictograms of acceptable recyclables on the receptacles would help increase compliance. Recently, I've started to see side by side recycle/trash bins with the trash bin labeled "Landfill" - a stronger reminder of where your trash actually goes - and your recycling if you use the wrong bin.

One of my favorite reusable snack bags is going on sale at 4:25pm ET today! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DZQT7FE/ref=gbph_tit_m18_8e1f_87a48d7a?pf_rd_p=7d10be8d-08c3-4da9-bab5-866cfd6f8e1f&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-18&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=13887280011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=8ZD0EGJF1YVB5F8BZFB7

Does anyone know of a good place to buy mason jars in bulk? I need about 30 8-ounce jars to host a make your own toothpaste workshop! :)

Oh right - craft store is a good idea as well.

    • Maggie Ostdahl 7/13/2018 8:21 AM
I've seen them at Target - or maybe try a craft store like Michaels.

Today it was an inconvenience to 'skip the bag.' I bought juice, some baked goods and picked up a prescription and had my 3 year old daughter that wanted to be held all at the same time. The lady asked me a couple of times (somewhat in disbelief to my answer of no) if I was sure I didn't want a bag and I told her that I was trying to reduce plastic in my life. She responded by saying she understood which surprised me because I'm used to grocery stores not understanding why I'm choosing less plastic. It was a bit of an inconvenience to juggle all of the items and a cranky toddler for the 200 feet to the car and then it didn't matter at all that I didn't get a bag. (and again I should have brought a reusable but I figured I was just popping in for the prescription)

A full week down! I’m still finding small ways to help myself refuse straws and plastic bags. My next push is going to be to carry reusable straws so my kids don’t need straws either. (I can go without straws but it’s harder for my kids)

I found it challenging to not use plastic grocery bags while on vacation because being away from my routine meant not having reusable bags but I was so determined that I just loaded up all of the items without bags. Take that plastic!!

We had to do the same thing with our produce! I forgot our reusable produce bags at home so we just put our fruits and vegetables right into our reusable grocery bags. It made checkout a bit more complicated but it was worth it! :)

  • Megan Anderson 6/26/2018 11:38 AM
If you haven't already - please take the pre-challenge survey. It will earn you/us 100 points!! (and it's really helpful information) The survey will close on July 6th so please take it by then. Also, you points may not show up until mid-July for that - do not worry - they will be there!
